THE CHAMPION CRICKETERS of 1975 who brought glory to the West Indies by winning the men’s Cricket World Cup will each be awarded US$10 000 (BDS$20 000).
This was announced last night by president of Cricket West Indies (CWI) Dr Kishore Shallow, as the players were feted and celebrated at a red-carpet event at Wyndham Grand Sam Lord’s Castle in St Philip.
He described the players as “giants of world cricket” who were “heroes, champions and revolutionaries”.
Shallow said: “And so tonight, we honour our giants. Those present – Sir Viv Richards, Lance Gibbs, Collis King, Deryck Murray, Sir Andy Roberts, Alvin Kallicharran, and the incomparable Sir Clive Lloyd, you were not just cricketers, you were revolutionaries.
“In addition to the medallion that you will collect tonight, on behalf of the CWI board, I am pleased to announce that we will be gifting each of the icons in attendance US$10 000. This is by no means your value to cricket, but just a token of our appreciation.”
He added: “They gave us pride, they gave us identity and they gave us hope. We must stand with them during and after their playing days.
“To all awardees tonight, congratulations. This is not just a recognition of achievement, but a charge to continue leading with purpose.” (PS)
