271 firearms destroyed by police

Police destroyed 271 firearms this morning at the Central Police Station, Coleridge Street, The City.

The weapons, which ranged in calibre from .22 to 12-gauge shotguns, were removed from circulation following successful convictions in court and also from seizures made during police operations across the island.

Public Affairs and Communications Officer, Inspector Ryan Brathwaite, said the initiative formed part of the Barbados Police Service’s continued efforts to reduce gun violence and keep illegal firearms off the streets.

“Firearms are obviously a danger and the use of firearms indiscreetly will cost lives, so our aim is to rid the street of all firearms. One firearm on the street is one too many,” he stated.

The exercise was conducted under the supervision of Superintendent Stephen Herbert and an independent witness, Gary Alleyne, was also present.

Brathwaite also sought to reassure the public they would continue to serve and protect amidst the violent crime.
