$5.7m in school repairs underway

Work is ongoing at several schools as part of the Ministry of Educational Transformation’s (MEDT) 2025 summer school repairs programme.

According to a statement released by the ministry, $5.7 million have been invested in the project to upgrade and refurbish 45 schools across Barbados in preparation for the Michaelmas term beginning in September.

The repairs include upgrades to bathroom facilities, the construction of classrooms, roofing repairs, auditorium refurbishments and enhanced safety measures to offer a functional environment for learning.

The Nation team visited a number of schools listed for repairs where crews were hard at work to complete operations.

At the Wesley Hall Junior School in King Street, St Michael, sections of the staff room ceiling were repaired, and the foundations laid for the construction of a prefabricated building on a section of the compound.

Upgrades to the bathroom facilities were almost complete in a structure that included spaces for a tool shed, showers and bathrooms for students and staff.

George Lamming Primary School at Bridge Road and Belmont Primary School in My Lord’s Hill, both in St Michael, were also getting upgraded bathroom facilities, with crews at the latter working assiduously to finish the installation of a complex that will house additional showers and a tool shed.

At Sharon Primary School, a prefabricated building was under construction, while Eden Lodge Primary and St Giles Primary schools were both getting garbage disposal facilities that were nearly complete.

Lighting enhancements were also made both inside and outside of several schools to improve visibility
and safety.

The ministry has also adopted a phased construction process during the summer break.

Alongside the aforementioned schools, upgrades to student and staff bathrooms were also undergoing at St Margaret’s, Hindsbury, Lawrence T. Gay, Arthur Smith, Cuthbert Moore, Gordon Greenidge, and Hillaby Turners Hall Primary schools.

Roof repairs are continuing at the St Bernards Primary and the auditorium at St George Primary is being refurbished.

Meanwhile, fencing repairs and new installations are slated for Hillaby Turners Hall, Bayley’s Primary, Grazettes Primary and other locations, to improve their security.
