Government on Thursday announced a new yearly scholarship bearing the name of Sir Frank Worrell, one of the world’s greatest cricket players and the first black captain of the West Indies team.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight revealed the news during the annual Emancipation Walk held at Emancipation Village in Haggatt Hall, St Michael.
The Senator said that in keeping with Government’s commitment to help redevelop interest and expertise in cricket on the island, the new scholarship will be on offer to students of the University of the West Indies who are interested in deepening their knowledge in the sport.
She said“I am extremely proud today on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Government of Barbados to announce that the Government will be launching a Frank Worrell Cricket Development Scholarship. That scholarship will be an annual scholarship of $25,000, and it will be to support students at the University of the West Indies who are interested to either study the management or the science of cricket.”
She added: “We do so because we understand fundamentally that the stories that have been left for us are stories that we have to be able to capture and protect, and we do so in a multifaceted way. We understand that building a strong West Indies cricket is important to that task of nation building.”

Senator Munro-Knight also revealed that on August 6th under the support of the National Cultural Foundation, a new call will be made for a cricketing film project to be produced.
“We will also be launching a call for a film project, which will chronicle the history of the evolution of cricketing excellence in Barbados. It will chronicle what we have given to the world, [and] it will chronicle the stories. It will not only do that by speaking to the stories of the greats, but it would also as well make sure we understand the fundamental link between cricket and social development.” shamarblunt@barbadostoday.bb
