In a significant effort to protect coastal ecosystems, the Sandals Foundation and interCaribbean Airways are leading a collaborative initiative for International Coastal Cleanup Day, joined by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cavehill and Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI). This major beach cleanup in Barbados will bring together a total of 50 volunteers from these organizations to remove trash and debris from Oistins Beach, helping to preserve the island’s natural beauty and marine environment.
On September 21st, volunteers will converge on one of Barbados’ most beloved coastlines equipped with gloves, bags, and tools necessary to safely collect, record, and dispose of waste, ensuring the beach remains a welcoming environment for all.
A look back at last year’s efforts, where Sandals Foundation ambassadors united to clean up shores and protect marine life.
“While removing trash is important, what’s even more critical is fostering a culture of environmental stewardship,” said Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation. “Through initiatives like these, we are developing ambassadors for the environment—educating schools and communities about reducing waste, understanding the importance of protecting our coastal ecosystems, and advocating for better waste management in coastal areas. These are the actions that lead to lasting change and preserve the livelihoods that depend on our natural resources.”
Faith Exeter, PR, Communications, and Partnerships Lead at interCaribbean Airways, echoed the sentiment: “We’re taking action today to preserve the beauty of our environment and support our communities. By engaging youth in initiatives like this beach cleanup, we’re making a down payment on a sustainable future, ensuring our efforts create lasting change for future generations.”
Across the Caribbean, the Sandals Foundation has mobilized team members in all nine islands in which it operates implementing coastal cleanup activities in Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados, The Bahamas, Grenada, Curacao, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Antigua and Barbuda.
