Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey has called on student leaders to prioritise compassion and service over power and control.
Speaking at a prefect investiture ceremony at the Seventh-day Adventist Secondary School this week, he challenged common perceptions of leadership.
“Many of you have been taught that leadership is about power and control, but that’s not what it truly is,” Humphrey told the students. “Leadership is about compassion, protection, and making decisions that benefit others.”
Humphrey, who is Member of Parliament for the school’s area, drew on his own experiences growing up in the nearby Pine community to inspire the students.
He admitted to struggling with behaviour issues during his school years, sharing, “I used to get in trouble a lot. Every year, my report card said the same thing—Kirk talks too much, Kirk doesn’t listen.”
The St Michael South MP used his personal story to emphasise the potential for change and growth.
“Life is not determined immediately. Your future can change,” he said, offering encouragement to students who might feel disheartened by their current circumstances.
Likening compassionate leadership to the biblical story of the Good Samaritan, Humphrey urged the newly appointed prefects to exhibit kindness and forgiveness.
“Leadership requires compassion, especially when it may not seem deserved. Being a leader is about serving those around you and showing empathy in every situation,” he explained.
The ceremony marked an important milestone for the students, with Humphrey’s message of growth, humility, and compassion resonating with both pupils and teachers. He emphasised that leadership is not confined to formal positions but is an opportunity for everyone to make a positive impact in their community. (LG)
