Full-time tribunal ‘by year end’

Minister of Labour Colin Jordan has announced plans to establish a full-time Employment Rights Tribunal by the end of the year, a critical step towards advancing workers’ rights and labour justice in Barbados.

Speaking at the Caribbean Policy Development Centre’s (CPDC) regional meeting launch at The Crane Resort yesterday, Jordan underscored the necessity of creating safe and equitable work environments, which he said were vital to a people centred and sustainable economy.

“Resilience includes ensuring that workers’ rights are protected and that they can work in safe, fulfilling environments,” he stated, adding that the full-time tribunal would strengthen access to labour justice and bolster workforce protections.

Jordan also called for greater engagement from civil society in policymaking, asserting that a collaborative approach was essential for tackling the region’s most pressing issues, including climate resilience, food security and economic sustainability.

“This Government and this minister believe that the third sector, civil society, must be able to share and engage so that as wide a range of perspectives as possible can be considered as we develop policy in this country,” he noted. (CLM)
