Emergency surgeries only

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) will only be conducting emergency or urgent surgeries for at least the next week.

A release from Barbados’ main health care institution said the Air Handler Unit (AHU) system for the Main Operating Theatre was being redesigned and replaced with an upgraded system. Additionally, the hospital was also addressing technical issues with the chillers that support the AHU.

“These works are part of the $130 million Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Programme allocated to the QEH for 2025, aimed at modernising our infrastructure and enhancing care delivery,” QEH said in a media release.

Select procedures were relocated to the Obstetrics Theatre and the QEH was also “actively engaging partner institutions to facilitate the conduct of elective surgeries offsite, where possible”.

Work is tentatively scheduled to be completed on May 21, weather permitting and barring unforeseen circumstances.

Members of the public can also contact the QEH Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS/Help Desk) at 536-4800. (PR/SAT)
