Twelve-year-old Skye Walters has her head in the clouds for all the right reasons, after clinching one of the highest marks in this year’s 11-Plus exam and securing a coveted place at Queen’s College.
Her achievement not only filled her with joy but also brought pride to the Government Hill, St Michael school community.
With an impressive overall mark of 239.78, including a 100 in English and 97 in Mathematics, the excited but shy student shared her surprise and joy when a team from Barbados TODAY visited her school on Tuesday.
“I felt happy and in shock, because I did not think I was going to get that mark,” Skye said, still absorbing the news.
In recapping her preparation for this year’s exam, she said, “I went home and I revised and I also paid attention in class, and whatever I missed, I made sure I got back [to it].”
Now looking forward to this next chapter of her academic journey at QC, Skye already has plans to get involved in extracurricular activities.
“I would like to join volleyball and cheerleading when I am there,” she added.
Her teacher, Sarita Moseley, reflected on the path that led to Skye’s achievement, highlighting the targeted and inclusive approach taken in the classroom.
Moseley explained: “It would have started in Class 3 when we came together, making sure that they understood fundamental concepts. You know, you would have had test papers, reviewing concepts, making sure they understand what they need to. Also having differentiated support, because not all children learn the same way, and creating that environment in a classroom that would foster success and making sure that they believe in themselves.”
Moseley also praised the support from Skye’s parents and the parents of the rest of the Class Four group.
“I was extremely pleased… It was gratifying,” she said of the performance. “The hard work you put into it – it reaffirms why you do what you do.”
Principal Paula Toppin echoed those sentiments and said the entire school was thrilled with Skye’s success. She also saluted the parents for their support.
“Our parents have always been supportive, and this class was no different. They came out, they brought donations, they helped us find resources. They gave support, they asked questions, they kept us on our toes throughout the entire process,” Toppin said. “They do their best to ensure that they work with the teachers, they work with the school. If there are any challenges, we find creative ways to solve them.”
