A Grazettes, St Michael man denied stealing a coworker’s wallet but admitted to using a debit card he found to purchase items from a supermarket.
Peter Narine, 34, appeared before the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrate Court accused of stealing a wallet valued at $150, a Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union card valued at $50, a Barbados driver’s licence, BDS$300 and US$10 belonging to Shane Mayers on June 13. He was additionally charged with stealing $41.72 belonging to Mayers on the same date.
Prosecutor Randolph Boyce told the court that Mayers went to work that day and forgot his wallet in the bathroom, which he only realised later in the day when he went to make a purchase. After 1 p.m., he received a notification on his phone that a $41.72 purchase had been made at Lionel C Hill Supermarket. He checked with the establishment and was able to identify Narine on the security footage, and contacted the police.
Narine told the court he knew nothing about the wallet and was unaware that the card belonged to a co-worker, as he had found it on the ground outside.
He was released on $2 500 bail before being ordered to return to court on June 27.
