General secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Toni Moore, has called for the creation of a comprehensive Labour Code to modernise and unify industrial relations legislation, declaring it a vital step toward improving worker protection and national development.
Moore was speaking yesterday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre during the official launch of Barbados’ second Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP), a collaborative initiative involving Government, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the island’s social partners.
The DWCP aims to promote employment, workers’ rights, social dialogue and social protection, while aligning with national development goals.
“This is a very exciting time for labour in Barbados,” Moore told the gathering, which included Minister of Labour Colin Jordan, ILO Caribbean Director Joaquim Pintado Nunes and representatives of Government and employers. “We are encouraged by this second Decent Work Country Programme, but one of the most critical outcomes we must achieve is the development and implementation of a Labour Code.”
