West Indies trail Australia by 286

West Indies trail Australia by 286 runs at the end of the first day of the second Test at the National Stadium in Grenada.

After choosing to bat, the visitors were bowled out for 286 runs, with wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey and Beau Webster the top scorers with 63 and 60, respectively.

Alzarri Joseph was the star with the ball for the hosts, taking 4-61 from his 15.5 overs. Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph ended the day with figures of 2-45 and 1-63, respectively.

When Shamar Joseph removed the in-form Travis Head via a smart low catch by wicketkeeper Shai Hope for 29 runs, it looked like Australia were staring down the barrel of another low first innings score.

However, the middle order performed a rescue act once again, taking the side from 110-5 to 222-6 thanks to a sixth-wicket partnership of 112 runs off 150 balls. Carey picked up where he left off from his second innings half-century last Test, with a boundary-laden effort this afternoon, hitting ten fours and one six in his 11th half-century in this format.

Webster was not as fluent at the start of his innings, but gradually settling, hitting six fours and one six. The pair was finally separated when Carey spooned a short Justin Greaves delivery to Kraigg Brathwaite – who is standing in his 100th Test – at midwicket.

Captain Patrick Cummins was his customary proactive self and hit 17 from 20 balls before he was bowled by Joseph with a delivery which kept low. Australia’s tail wagged for a while with Mitchell Starc (6), Josh Hazlewood (10*) and Nathan Lyon (10) after Webster called for a second run that never was, and was promptly run out.  (JC)
