Alleyne School duo Natarie Lavine (left) and Rejada Hinds did Barbados proud with second-place showings at the 5th North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-13 and Under-15 Championship over the weekend in Managua, Nicaragua.
Competing in the Under-13 boys’ pentathlon (five events), Lavine earned 3206 points to edge out compatriot Alex Jones-Ifill (3202) who finished third of 29 competitors.Lavine’s results read: 60m sprint (8.35 seconds – 782 points – 12th), Long Jump (4.66 metres – 552 pts – 7th), High Jump (1.50m – 623pts – 3rd), Ball Throw (57.03m – 605 pts – 3rd), 1,000m run (3:06.65 minutes – 644 pts – 2nd).
Ethan Gunpot of Grenada won the Under-13 boys’ pentathlon with 3,224 points, under the record of 3,331 held by Barbadian Ramarco Thompson.
Hinds’ silver-medal performance of 4,340 points came in the 32-member Under-15 girls’ heptathlon (seven events): 80m (9.75s – 851 pts – 2nd), Long Jump (5.43m – 704 pts – 3rd), Shot Put (9.18m – 482pts – 6th), 60-metre hurdles (8.99s – 767pts – 1st), High Jump (1.45m – 582 – 5th), Ball Throw (42.62m – 475pts – 6th), 1,000m run (03:30.10m – 479pts – 6th).
Rosmery Aybar of the Dominican Republic won the event with 4,414 points, under the record of 4,466 held by the now Olympic 100-metre gold medallist Julian Alfred of St Lucia.
Hinds’ Under-15 teammate Seiarra Burrowes was 14th (3,418), while the Under-15 heptathlon boys duo of Shakobi Gittens (4,630) and Ajalah Cumberbatch (4,181) finished eighth and 22nd respectively.In the Under-13 girls’ pentathlon, Barbadian pair Janae Belgrave (2,490) and Zaniyah Browne (2,240) were 10th and 16th respectively.
