Bajan officers praised for standout performance in UK policing programme

The Barbados Police Service and the public will be benefiting from the enhanced management and operations skills of two of its top officers, who graduated from the College of Policing Executive Leaders Programme last Friday with excellent reviews.

Acting Assistant Commissioners of Police, Sonia Boyce and Barry Hunte, were among 48 high-level participants who successfully completed an intense 19-week programme at the Royton, Coventry, UK institution.

Two of only six in the programme from outside the UK – there were two each from the Republic of Ireland, two from the Cayman Islands, and one from Nepal – Boyce and Hunte were praised for their quality, commitment, experience, and especially their insightful contributions, which significantly enhanced discussions.

Their graduation was witnessed by the Acting High Commissioner of Barbados in London, Mackie Holder, who said it was a matter of great pride to hear the praise heaped on the Barbados officers by training directors.

The quality of the transformative programme was reflected in the range of high-level officers from across policing in the UK who participated, including representatives from specialised agencies such as the National Crime Agency, the Home Office, and the National Police Coordination Centre, as well as top commanders who attended the graduation.

Awards were presented by Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson QPM, Service Director, Executive Leaders Programme, and Chief Constable Sir Andy Marsh, Chief Executive Officer, College of Policing.

The Executive Leaders Programme is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders, with a focus on leadership, standards, and performance, as emphasised by the College of Policing. It was executed in three modules, in small groups: organisational leadership, personal and inclusive leadership, and operational leadership.

Both Boyce and Hunte, who described the College of Policing experience as very rewarding, not only benefitted from interactions with outstanding police from across the UK, including many dedicated police agencies, but from field experiences, some unplanned, in areas like Liverpool; one involving operations related to, and participation in, a church service attended by the King and Queen; and a valuable session in London with the Metropolitan Police.

The top cops, who return to Barbados on Sunday, are looking forward to applying their new skills and knowledge to the various challenges facing the society and The Barbados Police Service. (TBPS/PR)
