Grateful Senator Trim to give her best

Barbados’ newest Senator Roshanna Trim took her seat in the Upper House yesterday, promising to carry out the new assignment to the best of her ability.

“I hope to do the work that has been assigned and that the people of Barbados look forward to us doing, as we continue to contribute to the development of Barbados and building a better life for our people,” Trim said, shortly after being escorted into the Chamber by Senate clerk Nigel Jones.

“Today, I rise with a heart full of gratitude and humility, having served as a national youth parliamentarian. I am no stranger to the Chamber, however, I recognise the work that is done here within the Senate,” the 30-year-old said.

She first thanked God for ordering her steps as well as her family, her community, the Barbados Labour Party, the party’s League of Young Socialists and the Prime Minister of Barbados and the Government for the confidence placed in her.

Trim, a social activist and ardent advocate for youth, was selected to fill the Senate position left vacant by Senator Chad Blackman who was appointed Minister of Educational Transformation after successfully contesting the St James North constituency seat left

vacant with the retirement of former BLP St James North representative, backbencher Edmund Hinkson, in April.

In welcoming Senator Trim, President of the Senate Reginald Farley noted she was “not an entire stranger” to the Chamber, since she had visited when the Youth Parliament held its debates there.

“The difference here is that these are real debates,” Farley told Trim, also advising this time around, her voice would be “larger and more important”.

The Senate President said he looked forward to the same drive and enthusiasm Trim displayed in the Youth Parliament and in youth leadership, while also assuring her that notwithstanding her being the most junior member of the Senate, “there is no juniority or seniority in the Chamber”.

“We expect, therefore, your full participation and contribution to all matters which are before us.” (GC)
