BDF to target modern threats with new tools, other investments

The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) will be stepping up its investments in equipment, training, and youth outreach as it adapts to what its Chief of Staff describes as “complex, volatile, and high-pressure security environments”.

Speaking during the organisation’s 46th anniversary service at the St Matthias Anglican Church in Christ Church on Sunday, Brigadier Carlos Lovell said the BDF remained a “critical component to the survival of this country” and would not meet tomorrow’s challenges “with yesterday’s tools”.

Plans include upgrading maritime assets to strengthen border protection and safeguard the island’s blue economy, enhancing surveillance and communications systems, and bolstering cyber defence capabilities.

He also confirmed that work was progressing on a new state-of-the-art BDF headquarters to improve operational effectiveness and quality of life for personnel.

In a move to address youth crime, the Chief of Staff said the BDF will partner with the Ministry of Educational Transformation in the recently launched Youth Upliftment Programme to help steer vulnerable young people away from criminal activity.

He praised members of the force for their “courage, discipline and devotion”, noting their contributions to national security, maritime protection, disaster response, and support for the Barbados Police Service in tackling violent crime and illegal firearms.

He also highlighted the BDF’s role in developing the island’s cyber security capabilities.

The service was held under the theme ‘Committed and Courageous in Service’ and featured musical performances by Barbados Cadet Corps member and instrumentalist Ashanelle Gordan and singers Yahandje Daniel and Ian Webster. (STT)
