Military pomp and ceremony as BDF celebrates 46th anniversary

With precision marching, stirring music, and striking ceremonial display, the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) marked its 46th anniversary with a parade and sunset concert on Saturday evening at St Ann’s Fort.

The occasion, held under the patronage of Acting President His Excellency the Very Reverend Dr Jeffrey Gibson, unfolded with full military pomp and pageantry, befitting the legacy of a force that has served the nation with distinction for nearly half a century.

Various uniformed divisions were on parade.

Addressing the gathering, Chief of Staff Brigadier Carlos Lovell said the BDF had acted as a shield and a beacon for the past 46 years, protecting Barbados and illuminating pathways for future generations.

Reflecting on the BDF’s journey from modest beginnings, Brigadier Lovell said the force had grown into a professional, adaptive and respected institution that stands shoulder to shoulder with the finest military organisations in the world.

He noted that, much like Barbados itself, “the BDF punches above its weight class in any arena,” citing its service in defending the island’s shores, supporting regional partners, and responding to disasters—including its pivotal role during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“This anniversary is more than a number,” he stated. “It is a living testament to the endurance, to the sacrifice, to the resilience and to the unbroken tradition of exemplary military service to this country.”

Brigadier Lovell also outlined a bold vision for the future of the force, one that is “modernised, more dynamic, more agile and more technologically advanced—capable of operating in every domain: land, sea, air and cyberspace.”

Stressing the importance of investing in the people behind the uniform, he reaffirmed, “Their development must be our highest priority. We will exhaust every facility for learning and cross-training to ensure that we can support the continuity of governance in every eventuality.”

He further declared the BDF’s renewed commitment to maritime and territorial defence, countering threats from organised crime and cyber-attacks, and strengthening regional partnerships.

“Security in the Caribbean is collective and indivisible,” he said, as he also highlighted the force’s deepening role in nation-building, development, environmental protection, and the socio-economic well-being of Barbados.

Brigadier Lovell closed his remarks by acknowledging government efforts to enhance the welfare and national recognition of the BDF.

Chief Justice Leslie Haynes presented the soldiers with the meritorious service medals for their service in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

During the ceremony, medals were presented to several soldiers for their meritorious service in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

Lovell commended the awardees, noting that they “performed exceedingly well to bring the fisheries complex back to a state of normalcy. (STT)
