Traffic restrictions announced for CARIFESTA XV

The Barbados Police Service has outlined traffic management measures to be implemented during CARIFESTA XV, as the Botanical Gardens in Waterford, St. Michael, will serve as the Village and centre of activities from Friday, August 22, until Sunday, August 31.

The restrictions will run daily from 6:00 p.m. until midnight throughout the festival period.

Police have advised that a specific traffic flow will be in effect from the Clyde Walcott Roundabout through Waterford to the Codrington and Green Hill junction.

Local access will be permitted from Station Hill onto Waterford Road, from Bush Hall onto Codrington Road, and from the Codrington and Green Hill junction where traffic will continue along Green Hill. However, there will be no access to Codrington Road from Spooners Hill or Green Hill.

Public Service Vehicles, including Transport Board buses, ZRs and TAPs, will continue their normal day-to-day routes between Station Hill and the Clyde Walcott Roundabout.

On non-concert days, which exclude August 22, 26, 27, 29, 30 and 31, there will be no through traffic from Station Hill at its junction with Savannah Road to the Waterford and Station Hill junction, except for local access permitted as far as Bellevue.

Motorists travelling along Station Hill Road from the traffic lights at Station Hill and Bridge Road will be diverted onto Savannah Road. During this period, Waterford Bottom Road will remain two-way as normal.

Traffic control points will be established at the Waterford and Station Hill junction, the Bush Hall and Codrington junction, the Codrington and Green Hill traffic lights, the NBC entrance at Waterford, and the NCC entrance at Codrington.

The BPS has reminded the public that anyone who contravenes these rules or refuses to comply with instructions given by an officer in uniform is guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine of $500 or imprisonment for up to three months.

These measures will not apply to vehicles belonging to the Barbados Police Service, the Barbados Defence Force, the Barbados Fire Service, or other emergency services.

Officers will also be deployed where necessary to assist with traffic management during the ten-day cultural event.

Traffic advisory for CARIFESTA XV opening ceremony

The Barbados Police Service has announced a series of traffic management measures ahead of the highly anticipated opening ceremony of CARIFESTA XV, which will take place at Queen’s Park on Friday, August 22, from 4:00 p.m. until the close of the event.

The changes will begin at 1:00 p.m. on the day and remain in effect until the ceremony ends.

Between 1:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., several key roads in Bridgetown will be closed to traffic. These include Broad Street from its junction with Prince William Henry Street to High Street, Bridge Street and Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge from St. Michael’s Row to Fairchild Street, Constitution Road from Nursery Drive to Crumpton Street, and St. Michael’s Row from Crumpton Street to Marhill Street. Roads are expected to reopen at 8:00 p.m.

Local access will be permitted from Jemmotts Lane to Probyn Street at its junction with Lower Bay Street, while Transport Board buses will be allowed entry from River Road at John Beckles Drive to the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal.

Adjustments have also been made for route taxis and minibuses. From 1:30 p.m., vehicles travelling from Tweedside Road will be rerouted through Halls Road, the Mencea Cox Roundabout, Constitution Road, and onto Nursery Drive. Those approaching from Belmont Road will follow a similar diversion via the roundabout onto Constitution Road and Nursery Drive.

Traffic from Collymore Rock will instead move through the Ena Walters Roundabout, River Road, John Beckles Drive, Constitution Road, and Nursery Drive, while vehicles from Bay Street will be diverted through Jemmotts Lane, the Ena Walters Roundabout, River Road, and onward via John Beckles Drive and Constitution Road.

Transport Board buses and Transport Augmentation Programme (TAP) vehicles will also see adjusted routes from 1:30 p.m. until the end of the event. Those entering from Station Hill, Tweedside Road, and Belmont Road will be directed through Halls Road, the Mencea Cox Roundabout, Constitution Road, and John Beckles Drive before proceeding along River Road to the Fairchild Street Terminal.

Vehicles from Collymore Rock will instead use the Ena Walters Roundabout and River Road to reach the terminal, while traffic from Lower Bay Street will travel via Jemmotts Lane and the Ena Walters Roundabout before continuing along River Road.

To ensure smooth flow and safety, traffic control points will be set up at key locations including the Bay Street and Jemmotts Lane junction, Bay Street and Wellington Street, River Road and John Beckles Drive, Nelson Street and Fairchild Street, John Beckles Drive and Constitution Road, Roebuck Street and Pinfold Street, Crumpton Street and Constitution Road, the Bridge Street traffic lights, and Broad Street at Prince William Henry Street.

The TBPS has again reminded the public that any person who contravenes these rules or disobeys the instructions of a uniformed officer will be guilty of an offence and may face a fine of $500 or imprisonment for up to three months. These restrictions do not apply to emergency services, including vehicles belonging to the Police, Defence Force, or Fire Service.
