Teen stuns road tennis giant ‘Lil Man’

Seventeen-year-old Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology student Jael Greaves created the biggest upset in the four-year history of the Barbados Road Tennis Open (BRTO) when the Round of 32 was served off on Saturday night at Belfield.

South paw Greaves stunned the most feared attacker, Antonio “Lil Man” Daniel 22-20, 17-21, 21-17 in front of dozens of shocked supporters who held the belief that their “Big Man” would survive. However, buoyed by a group of his peers, Greaves signalled that a seismic youthful revolution was rumbling in road tennis.

Following locks from 15 up to 22, Daniel gave occasional flashes of his tennis brilliance. On the other hand Greaves, with tremendous confidence and daring shots, took the first game and battled strongly before losing the second.

Daniel went up 9-6 in the decider as the young gun fired to lock at nine and went ahead 11-9. Greaves never relinquished that lead, nullifying Daniel’s intimidating serves and punching to 17-14 with a breathtaking ace of his own. (KB)
