Barbados Royals Women head coach Ryan Hinds was full of praise for his team after their opening victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) at the Guyana National Stadium last Sunday afternoon.
He also indicated it was a good start to their campaign as they look for a third consecutive title. The former Barbados captain expects his players to continue in the same focus when they face Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders on Wednesday at 2pm. TKR will be led by Barbadian Deandra Dottin. They will be looking to rebound after a first round defeat by six runs at the hands of Guyana in the opening match last Saturday.
The Bajan outfit, led by Chinelle Henry in the absence of Hayley Matthews, defeated the home side by seven wickets with four balls to spare under the Duckworth Lewis Stern Method. The flamboyant Henry led from the front in her first match at the helm with 37 not out off just 19 balls which included four sixes on a good surface. Chasing a revised target of 138 in 18 overs after Guyana made 154-4, Henry guided the innings to 140-3 off 17.2 overs. It was the ideal start for both the team and the new skipper, who took over after Hayley Matthews was ruled out of the tournament.
“Henry took the responsibility of being brave and played some exquisite shots. She showed her call. Throughout the run-chase we kept it simple and always had a relaxed dressing room,” Hinds told NATIONSPORTS from Guyana. “You have to commend Henry. In a short period of time since she was named captain she was able to impart her knowledge and experience and made an immediate impact on the game and to the players.”
Hinda added: “For us, as a team going forward, we strive on unity and having a fun-loving environment, whether we win, lose or draw. The girls have been putting in a lot of work off the field, you could see them working very hard on their fitness. We are just taking it every game as it comes, we are in good shape going into our second match. We just have to remain focused.”
