Stadium work to start next week

Large scale excavation work is scheduled to get under way by next week for the rebuilding of the National Stadium at Waterford, St Michael.

Joyann Haigh, of Haigh Communications, the public relations company representing the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. which is overseeing the project, told the MIDWEEK NATION that the official start date for Phase 1 of the main stadium was September 8, adjusted from the official start date of September 1.

Haigh provided photographs and videos of the work so far which involved the dismantling of the old stadium.

She said: “The redevelopment of the Barbados National Stadium Project, a gift through grant funding from the People’s Republic of China, is moving forward, with key materials and personnel now on site. Container cubicles have been erected, and the Barbados Lumber Company site has been retrofitted to house the incoming workers from the Beijing Construction Engineering Group Co. Ltd.”

She added that minor construction activities had already commenced, including excavation for the tower crane’s foundation and preparation for hoarding.

While Haigh was unable to provide information about the acquisition of the neighbouring Lumber Company site, she said it was being incorporated into the new stadium as the warm-up area.

The $80 million stadium is to be completed by 2027.
