In celebration of International Literacy Day (ILD) earlier this month, and in line with this year’s theme, Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era, the Rotary Club of Barbados West renewed its commitment to education and lifelong learning by donating over 1 095 books, 60 backpacks, and 25 tablets to more than 20 primary schools across the island.
The initiative is part of Rotary Club West’s ongoing mission to promote literacy and provide young students with the tools they need to excel academically. By placing emphasis on both traditional reading materials and digital learning resources, the club aims to bridge gaps in access and ensure that students are better prepared to thrive in an increasingly knowledge-driven world.
“Literacy is the foundation of education and empowerment,” said President of the Rotary Club of Barbados West, Andre Wharton. “We are proud to continue our tradition of contributing resources that will inspire curiosity, strengthen learning, and open new opportunities for children across our island. By distributing both books and tablets, we’re making the theme of this year’s literacy day tangible — ensuring our children are equipped for both the print and digital world.”
The backpacks, with age-appropriate school supplies, the reading books, and tablets were delivered to schools in urban and rural communities. Teachers and principals welcomed the initiative, saying the additional resources will make a meaningful difference in classroom engagement and at-home learning.
This project aligns with Rotary International’s global focus on basic education and literacy, one of the organisation’s seven areas of focus.
The club expressed gratitude to its members, partners, and sponsors whose contributions made this project possible.
