The Barbados Community College (BCC) has acknowledged ongoing industrial action taken today by staff members represented by the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), in response to the institution’s recent decision to fill a vacant post.
Teachers have been off the job all morning, bearing placards in protest, with NUPW representatives also present on the ground in support of the action.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the College said it respects the right of its employees to engage in industrial action and reiterated its commitment to maintaining open dialogue in order to resolve the dispute.
“Today’s action arises from a decision taken by the College to fill a vacant post,” the statement read.
“While these discussions continue, the College’s priority remains ensuring that students’ learning experience and access to essential services are supported as much as possible.”
Principal of the Barbados Community College, Annette Alleyne, stressed that the administration remains focused on maintaining the institution’s academic standards and ensuring minimal disruption to student learning.
“We value our staff and the critical role they play in advancing the vision and mission of the Barbados Community College,” she said.
“We respect their concerns and are committed to working collaboratively. Our focus is on maintaining the quality of education and minimizing disruption to our students. And what is great about the Barbados Community College and what is great about this country is the freedom of expression and the fact that voices are not silenced.”
The College further expressed optimism that continued dialogue with staff and union representatives will lead to a mutually acceptable resolution.
“The BCC remains optimistic that, through continued dialogue with the staff and their representatives, an agreement can be reached that supports both the well-being of staff and the College’s ability to deliver relevant, high-quality education and training to the people of Barbados and the region,” the statement concluded.
