Being black and poor ‘not an excuse’

Too many young people have too much time on their hands to do nothing.

So declared Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes as he charged that parents were also not “parenting”.

The Chief Magistrate was speaking as he dealt with five youngsters – 20-year-old Serrian Jamali Scott-Fagan; Damon Hayden Cummins, 16; Tyreall Jamar Kidd, 16; Runaka Jeremiah Nurse, 17; and 18-year-old Dakari Deshawn Carmichael – who were charged in connection with a spate of robberies in four jurisdictions in the past two months.

He noted that young people did not appreciate the number of opportunities which were available to them in Barbados.
