The Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness (BAEH) has joined the global observance of World Mental Health Day 2025, urging greater focus on mental health reform and early intervention across Barbados.
In a statement marking the occasion, the organisation said approximately 80 per cent of its clients, both men and women, have experienced mental health challenges since its establishment in 2009. It added that its work has shown a strong link between homelessness and mental health, stressing that both issues must be addressed together.
The BAEH is advocating for a more holistic national approach that places emphasis on early support within schools, workplaces, and families. It also highlighted the need for continued education and awareness to reduce stigma and improve public understanding of mental illness.
Additionally, the organisation called for policy amendments related to the Emergency Order and how authorities respond to individuals on the streets who may be at risk to themselves or others. It suggested that community groups, shelters, and civil society organisations be trained and equipped to assess, document, and refer such cases to the Psychiatric Hospital or other relevant services.
According to the BAEH, such measures would help strengthen links between community and clinical care, allowing people in crisis to receive timely and respectful assistance.
The organisation said it remains committed to supporting those affected by homelessness and mental illness, and encouraged a national recommitment to compassion, mental wellness, and proactive reform.
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise awareness and promote mental health education around the world.
