The Barbados Cadet Corps entered a new chapter in its history on Saturday with a Change of Command and Sunset Ceremony at the Barbados Defence Force Headquarters, St Ann’s Fort, The Garrison, St Michael.
The event marked the official handover of leadership from Lieutenant Colonel David Dowridge to Lieutenant Colonel Carl Farley, who was installed as the ninth commandant of the Barbados Cadet Corps.
Cadets led the proceedings, taking charge of all major roles, including that of musical director — a move lauded by Lieutenant Colonel Dowridge.
The parade was led by members of the Barbados Cadet Corps.
In his final address as Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Dowridge, who has been involved in military service for 52 years, reflected on his tenure and expressed appreciation for the support he received.
“This is the best youth development programme in this country and I daresay throughout the Caribbean,” he said. “This corps needs to reinforce the fact that it is a school-based programme, and you must make sure that the schools, the principals, the ministry make room within the school’s curriculum for the Barbados Cadet Corps.”
Addressing his successor, he said, “It is your experience, your network that will put the best contribution that you can make to the development of this corps, and I wish you all the very best.”

Commandant Farley, who has accumulated 40 years of service and held the role of Deputy Commandant for the past 11 years, said he was excited to embark on this new journey and was grateful for the faith bestowed in him.
“I am committed to upholding and advancing the legacy established by Commander Dowridge and his predecessors,” he said.
“I pledge to serve my best as commandant and to lead this Barbados Cadet Corps selflessly, with integrity, transparency and impartiality.”
Addressing his team of officers, he added, “I believe in collaboration and open communication. I encourage each member of the team to actively share their ideas, feedback, and insights. I am confident that through our collective efforts we will achieve our objectives and overcome the challenges faced by the Barbados Cadet Corps.”
Highlighting the achievements of past members, Commandant Farley said it was evident that the Barbados Cadet Corps was on the right path.
During his tenure, he said there would be a focus on growing the membership of the organisation, especially among the sea cadets. Commandant Farley also made a plea for qualified, interested people to join their ranks as adult leaders to aid in the development of the island’s youth. (STT)
