Liberty Caribbean sights regional benefits with 5G+

Liberty Caribbean has reaffirmed its commitment to regional digital advancement by launching the first commercial 5G+ mobile network in the Eastern Caribbean.

Through its consumer brand Flow and its business arm Liberty Business, the region’s leading telecoms provider now has the latest generation of mobile connections in Barbados, signalling its intent to convert technological capability into tangible social and economic benefit for Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

Speaking at the launch, Senior Director and Head of Communications for Liberty Caribbean, Marilyn Sealy, framed the rollout as more than a technical upgrade – calling 5G+ “an infrastructure of possibility” that will materially change how people live, learn, work and receive care.

“Liberty Caribbean is proud to stand as a trusted partner, a strategic advisor, and a collaborative ally to governments, industry and communities as we move into this next era,” she said.

“5G+ enables richer learning environments, more resilient health services, smarter infrastructure and new economic pathways. But technology only fulfils its promise when it is deployed with clear purpose, secured responsibly, and made accessible to everyone it is meant to serve.”

Barbados is the first country in the Eastern Caribbean to launch commercial 5G+ mobile network.

The company’s initial rollout connects 22 high-impact sites across Barbados, with a target of 50 per cent population coverage by year-end and full island-wide availability expected by the end of 2026. Liberty Caribbean reiterated that security, inclusivity, affordability and education will accompany every megabit delivered.

“Security, inclusivity, affordability and education must accompany every megabit we deliver. Liberty Caribbean commits to supporting government and community programmes that ensure underserved areas benefit, that citizens understand the new opportunities available to them, and that privacy and resilience are safeguarded at every layer,” added Sealy.

The launch, held on October 15, follows Liberty Caribbean’s successful introduction of 5G in the Cayman Islands last year and forms part of a broader regional programme to extend next-generation connectivity across the Caribbean.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Senator Jonathan Reid

The event drew high praise from Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Senator Jonathan Reid, who commended Flow and Liberty Caribbean for vision and execution and underscored the role of 5G as baseline infrastructure for national development.

“Hearty congratulations to Flow, congratulations to Liberty Caribbean for this rollout. This roll-out wasn’t just for vanity, just to say that we have 5G. It was really for the purpose of ultimately understanding that Barbados is a fantastic country that spent a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of energy in social development, in physical development. The idea of 5G as a baseline infrastructure on which the future of the country can be developed is one of the key calls that we believe is necessary to get ahead,” he said.

Liberty Caribbean emphasised that the launch is the start of a deliberate programme of phased expansion, public-private collaboration, community outreach and education designed to ensure the new network delivers measurable public value in areas such as education, healthcare, tourism, enterprise and government services.

This milestone also reaffirms Liberty Caribbean’s century-long legacy of connecting Caribbean people, powering businesses and helping communities thrive – a sustained commitment that continues to guide the company’s investments in technology and innovation. (PR)
