The dispute between the Barbados Community College (BCC) and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) over the decision to fill a vacant post has been resolved, the BCC said in a release yesterday.
The controversy began when the college’s decision triggered industrial action at its Howells Cross Road, St Michael campus on September 30 where just over 50 staff members, some holding placards, called for the appointment to be rescinded.
Meetings
After three unsuccessful rounds of meetings between the BCC administration, led by principal Annette Alleyne, and the NUPW, the matter was referred to the Chief Labour Officer for conciliation.
Following those talks, Alleyne confirmed yesterday that the union had agreed in principle to a proposal from the college, officially ending the stand-off. However, it did not release details of that agreement.
“Mature discussions allowed appreciation of perspectives from both sides. These talks allowed the BCC to take a much closer
look at some of our processes. We will also implement strategies to enhance our social partnership with stakeholders, aiming to provide a higher standard of service to our students and staff.
“However, above all, the college will be looking forward to the healing process that is critical for us to realise our vision of becoming a world-class centre of excellence for education,” she said.
“We are grateful to the Labour Department for its guidance and to the NUPW for engaging in open and constructive dialogue. This outcome reflects our shared commitment to maintaining a positive and supportive working environment for all students and staff.”
