Christ Church residents demanded swift government action to tackle worsening road safety problems in Oistins, citing hazardous corners, poor signage and disorganised traffic flow that endanger both pedestrians and motorists.
During the Ideas Forum – Christ Church edition, held at Christ Church Foundation School on Thursday, community members raised pressing concerns they face in the parish.
Alphea Wiggins, a parent of a former Foundation student, stressed the need for a traffic signal at the top of Oistins Hill, pointing out the challenges pedestrians face crossing the road and the difficulties drivers encounter navigating the steep descent.
“I think that junction needs some kind of signalling… it is very difficult crossing or turning down Oistins Hill,” she said.
Safety issues were also raised near the wall surrounding Christ Church Parish Church, close to the burial site of former prime minister Sir Harold Bernard St John. Its proximity to the road makes manoeuvring vehicles particularly challenging.
“Up ‘til tonight, when I was coming here, I had difficulty because a big bus was coming and it is really difficult in that corner,” she said.
The Oistins terminal was another area of concern, described as chaotic and unsafe for both pedestrians and drivers. Wiggins suggested paving the area and adding clear road markings to improve order, safety and overall appearance.
“We can actually pave out there and bring a bit of order and tidiness… and possibly do some markings,” she said.
Former students of Foundation reflected that these are issues they have personally experienced, especially for those who walked or caught the bus to school.
Organised as part of We Gatherin’, the Ideas Forum provided residents with a platform to share concerns and suggestions directly with leaders. (LE)
