Benches champion breastfeeding in public spaces

A new initiative aimed at championing breastfeeding support across Barbados saw its public launch last weekend, as the Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Foundation (BCNF), working in partnership with Antilles Outdoor, unveiled the country’s first series of public markers promoting breastfeeding awareness.

Four brightly branded benches have now appeared at Belleville, Sunset Crest, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Randall Phillips Polyclinic, each featuring a striking message: “See It. Support It”. The benches are designed to help normalise and celebrate breastfeeding in public, with a clear reminder that mothers deserve comfort, respect, and encouragement as they feed their children.

“Every mother should feel confident and supported to feed her child wherever she needs to,” said Dr Alison Bernard, executive director of BCNF. “These benches send a simple message: No judgment, no side eye; just see it and support it. When we support breastfeeding, we support families and strengthen our nation.”

The initiative, part of the foundation’s ongoing campaign #TakeASeatForBreastfeeding, combines grassroots community education with social media outreach, and links with wider partnerships to promote healthier environments for women and children.

Members of the public are being encouraged to visit the benches, take photos, and post their own messages of support using hashtags including #NoSideEyeSupport, #TakeASeatForBreastfeeding, and #FirstSeatForLife.

The project, implemented by Antilles Outdoor, signals a push to make acceptance and inclusion a visible part of everyday Barbadian life. Adam Gibbs, innovation director at Antilles Outdoor, said, “Public spaces tell stories about who we are. By dedicating these benches to breastfeeding awareness, we’re helping make acceptance and inclusion a visible part of everyday life in Barbados.”

The campaign aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, reinforcing Barbados’ public commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes through increased community action and education.
