Update: Heavy rains trigger overnight flood warning for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has upgraded its earlier alert to a flood warning, as heavy rainfall continues to impact the island.

According to the BMS, persistent unstable weather is generating widespread flooding across low-lying districts, with runoff from higher elevations already being observed.

Officials warn that severe flooding is possible overnight, including soil erosion, land slippage on exposed slopes, and fast-moving water carrying debris downslope. Areas at the foot of hillsides and along coastal roads remain particularly vulnerable.

The conditions have made some roads slow-moving and others potentially impassable as excess water spreads across roads, fields, storm drains, canals and private property.

Forecasters say the island is being affected by a surface trough combined with low- to mid-level instability and upper-level support. During the day, 5.5 inches of rain were recorded, and an additional 1 to 3 inches are possible through the night, along with periods of moderate to intense showers, rain and isolated thunderstorms.

A flood warning is issued when gradual flooding from heavy or prolonged rainfall is occurring or imminent.

This warning, issued at 6 p.m., will be updated or terminated by 6 a.m. Monday, if conditions warrant. (BMS)
