Fraud duo urged to maintain fine payments

Two women convicted of theft, money laundering and forgery have been told to keep up their payments or face imprisonment.

A High Court judge noted their progress on substantial fines but stressed that the remaining sums, particularly for money laundering offences, must be cleared by the due date.

When Sabina Isaie, also known as Sabina John, of Grosvenor Road, Carrington Village, and Petular Henry, of Chase Gap, Halls Road, both of St Michael, reappeared in the No. 5 Supreme Court for a case review, Justice Pamela Beckles commended the two for their progress, noting that in relation to the theft fines, the former had fully paid the $12 500, and the latter only had $1 300 to clear the balance.

Each of the convicted women must also pay $12 500 in relation to the money laundering offences, due by April 27.

“You are making progress, but you are still not going as fast as we would like,” the judicial officer said.

In April last year, a jury convicted the two of stealing $21 690 in cash, six rings, two bangles, one chain and one pair of earrings valued at $2 995 belonging to Cynthia St Juste; and one chain with pendant and four pairs of earrings valued at $459 belonging to Helen St Juste and of disposing of the cash and jewellery between March 27, 2018, and June 7, 2018.

Between May 18, 2018, and June 7, 2018, with intent to defraud Republic Bank Barbados Limited, they forged a job letter and three payslips bearing the letterhead of 2 Advanced Electronics. They also forged three credit union statements on the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Limited letterhead, made a bogus estimate on the letterhead of Advanced Electronics (1992), and forged a FLOW telephone bill.

The duo was also convicted of stealing $300 in cash belonging to St Juste on March 27, 2018, and disposing of the stolen money between March 27, 2018, and June 7, 2018.

Failure to pay the fines will result in a three-year prison sentence.
