Traffic changes for Christmas in the Square lighting ceremony

Motorists are being advised of several traffic changes that will take effect today, December 10, for the Common Wealth Society of Barbados’ “Christmas in the Square” lighting ceremony at Independence Square, Bridgetown.
According to the police, traffic adjustments will be in place from 4:30 p.m. until the end of the event.
Partial road closure
Fairchild Street will be partially closed, with the left lane from the junction with Bay Street to the traffic lights closed to general traffic. Only public service vehicles will be allowed access along that stretch.
Traffic diversions
Motorists travelling along Bay Street towards Bridgetown are advised to:

Turn right onto Jemmott’s Lane at the traffic lights, then left onto River Road to continue into the city; or
Turn right onto Wellington Street, then left onto Nelson Street to enter the city.

Expected delays
Traffic delays are also expected as the Barbados Defence Force Band departs Queen’s Park via the Nelson Gate on Crumpton Street and proceeds to Independence Square. Delays are anticipated along:

Constitution Road
Crumpton Street
St. Michael Row
Bridge Street
Fairchild Street

Police warned that anyone who fails to comply with traffic directions or disobeys a lawful order from a uniformed police officer may face a $500 fine or three months’ imprisonment on summary conviction.
The restrictions will not apply to emergency vehicles or those operated by the Barbados Police Service, Barbados Defence Force, or Barbados Fire Service. Police officers will be deployed to assist with traffic management.
The Barbados Police Service has thanked the public for its cooperation and apologised for any inconvenience caused.
