Support local farmers during Christmas shopping

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security is urging Barbadians to make a deliberate effort to support local farmers this Christmas season, as the agricultural sector continues to rebuild following significant losses caused by recent heavy rains.

Minister Indar Weir noted that the torrential rainfall led to “significant crop damage, soil displacement and destruction of farm infrastructure,” leaving many farmers facing severe setbacks at a time when local produce is high in demand.

“Our farmers have endured tremendous loss. Entire fields have been washed out, livelihoods disrupted, and months of hard work undone in a single weekend. As Barbadians head out to do their Christmas shopping for ham, seasonings, and other vegetables, I am urging everyone to choose local. The only way our farmers can rebuild is if the public stands with them during this period,” Weir stated.

Expressing confidence that the island will rally behind its farmers, he added: “Barbadians have always shown compassion and community spirit. During this Christmas season, let that spirit guide your choices. Support a farmer, buy local, and together we will rebuild stronger.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Terry Bascombe, also highlighted the need for collective responsibility as households prepare their holiday menus.

“Christmas is a time when food takes centre stage. We are appealing to Barbadians to be mindful of where those foods come from. Our farmers suffered real and immeasurable losses from the rains, and they need our support now more than ever,” Bascombe said.

Chief Agricultural Officer Michael James, explained that the ministry’s technical officers have been in the fields conducting assessments and providing guidance, but stressed that national support remains essential to the recovery process.
