Spike in respiratory illnesses, traffic injuries strains QEH A&E

A spike in respiratory illnesses, coupled with a rise in injuries linked to motor vehicle accidents, is putting increased pressure on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, resulting in longer waiting times for some patients.

In a notice issued recently, the QEH said the surge in cases has affected patient flow and the number of new patients that can be accommodated in the department at any given time.

The hospital stressed that patients with life-threatening conditions will continue to receive immediate care under its triage system, but those with less urgent medical concerns may face extended waits.

As part of efforts to manage demand, the QEH is encouraging members of the public who feel unwell to seek guidance before visiting the Accident and Emergency Department. Patients may contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at 536-4800 via regular call or WhatsApp between 8:00 a.m. and midnight for an initial assessment and advice on next steps.

The hospital is also urging patients with non-emergency conditions to consider alternative care options, including the 24-hour clinic at the Winston Scott Polyclinic on Jemmotts Lane, St Michael, or their private physician where available.

The QEH apologised for the inconvenience and thanked the public for its patience and understanding as staff manage the increased demand.
