Man caught with cannabis, apologises

A man with no fixed place of abode who told the court he could not sleep without smoking marijuana has been reprimanded and discharged after admitting to possession of a small quantity of the drug.

Raul Kevin Anthony Jarvis appeared in the District ‘A’ Traffic Court and pleaded guilty to three drug charges.

The 27-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to having, trafficking, and intending to supply cannabis on Saturday, when he was brought before Magistrate Alison Burke.

The drug weighed 16 grams and had an estimated street value of $80.

The court heard from court prosecutor Sergeant Mary Eugene that police were on duty in Fairchild Street around 10:30 a.m. when their suspicions were aroused by the strong scent of marijuana emanating from the accused.

They approached him, and he consented to a search during which the drug was found. When asked about it, Jarvis said: “It is mine.”

Jarvis, who has no previous convictions, apologised to the court, saying that he was unable to sleep without first smoking marijuana.

Magistrate Burke reminded him that the drug was still illegal before reprimanding and discharging him for the offence.
