BHTA: Safety recognition will strengthen visitor confidence, global reputation

Barbados has clinched the top spot as the safest travel destination in the Americas and Caribbean for 2026, according to Travel and Tour World (TTW), outranking five South American nations and several others in a new global ranking.

One of the tourism industry’s leading spokesmen hailed the achievement as a major boost to the island’s international reputation.

Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), Javon Griffith, described the accolade as a timely endorsement of the country’s commitment to maintaining safety standards within the global tourism market.

“In today’s travel environment, safety and confidence are central to destination competitiveness. This recognition strengthens Barbados’ international reputation, supports visitor confidence, and enhances our appeal across key source markets,” Griffith told Barbados TODAY exclusively.

“It also underscores the importance of continued collaboration across the public and private sectors to protect and strengthen the standards that make Barbados not only a beautiful destination, but a trusted one.”

The respected travel and tourism publication, which reaches about 15 million readers worldwide and connects the global tourism industry through news and analysis, said the achievement comes at a moment when war between the US, Israel and Iran is reshaping international travel demand.

Travel and Tour World said: “Barbados overtakes Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Peru and more countries again as the safest travel destinations. This shift is rapid. This shift is powerful. As a result, travellers pivot fast. Consequently, safe destinations surge globally.

“The US-Iran-Israel conflict is now reshaping global tourism patterns. The US-Iran-Israel conflict is forcing travellers to rethink destinations. Barbados, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru are gaining fast. These destinations are rising as safe travel alternatives.”

TTW said airlines are also shifting routes and hotels are seeing growing demand. The publication argued that, as a result, safer destinations in the Americas and Caribbean are booming.

“Consequently, Barbados, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru are emerging as key winners in a rapidly changing global tourism landscape.”

It said the designation of the safest travel destinations in the Americas and Caribbean for 2026 has redefined tourism demand, and that strong safety frameworks are driving this surge.

“Airline connectivity expands rapidly. Hotel ecosystems strengthen. As a result, travellers pivot fast. Consequently, Barbados leads a new era of secure travel dominance globally.”

The online publication suggested that Barbados is emerging as one of the safest luxury island destinations in 2026 because it continues to position itself as one of the most secure and stable destinations in the Caribbean, benefitting from strong governance and a well‑regulated tourism economy. The government has invested heavily in tourism policing, ensuring that visitor-heavy zones remain safe and well monitored.

Tourist hotspots such as Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay and Crane Beach are carefully managed, it said. These areas maintain high visibility for public safety.

“Barbados operates a controlled tourism model”, TTW said. “This limits overcrowding and reduces risk exposure. Airline connectivity remains robust with direct flights from North America and Europe. Luxury hotels dominate the landscape. Resorts such as Sandy Lane deliver high-end secure environments. As a result, Barbados offers a low-risk, high-value travel experience.”
