Puncturing ex’s tyres costs man $2 000

A St James man has been ordered to pay $2 000 in compensation to his ex-girlfriend after admitting to puncturing all four tyres on her car, following a dispute on Tuesday.

Jermaine Ramon Williams, of Durants Village, Holders Hill, pleaded guilty in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court to the criminal damage of Amanda Catwell’s tyres, valued at $1 213.54 on April 7.

Prosecutor Victoria Leacock said that the two had been in a relationship which ended last December due to his behaviour. They continued to communicate, but this ended when the complainant blocked him. On Easter Monday, she unblocked him to message him about a matter and after a brief conversation, cursed and again blocked him. Later that day, she parked her car outside her home and went inside, but was awoken after 1 a.m. by a commotion outside.

She checked her phone and saw 11 missed calls from Williams, looked outside and saw his car drive off. She was informed that her tyres were flat and went outside and saw all four had been punctured. Catwell checked CCTV footage and saw the accused throwing rocks at her house before walking from his car, striking each tyre multiple times and leaving. Williams later admitted to police that he used scissors, the prosecutor said.

Acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick ordered him to pay compensation to the complainant within two months or face one month behind bars. Williams was also placed on a bond to keep the peace for six months, failing which he will be imprisoned for one month.

“Make sure that you keep away from this lady and she is going to keep away from you,” the magistrate warned.
