Repeat offender remanded after fresh theft charges

A 35-year-old man with a history of theft convictions has been remanded to Dodds Prison for 28 days after appearing in court on new theft and drug-related charges.

Dario Renaldo Brathwaite of no fixed address appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court accused stealing $60.73 in diesel and a fuel container valued at $61.19 from Cleveland Richard, as well as a bicycle valued at $700, the property of the State, on Whit Monday.

Brathwaite denied those charges and having cocaine and apparatus for using the controlled drug on May 26, the following day.

Prosecutor Victoria Leacock objected to his release, noting the accused’s 14 previous convictions and that his last conviction, for theft, occurred in August 2025, for which he was sentenced to one month in prison.

Indicating that he last appeared in that court on May 13 on a similar charge and highlighting the need for persons to protect their property, the prosecutor said that drug use was possibly connected to the alleged commission of these offences.

Admitting that he had an addiction problem, Brathwaite asked the court for assistance in breaking the habit.

Acting Chief Magistrate Frederick ordered his remand to Dodds Prison, stating that the move was essential for both his personal safety and the protection of the public.

The matter continues on June 25.
