Charities push to improve literacy with ‘Little Libraries’

The Prince Godwill D. Fomusoh Foundation (PGDFF), in partnership with Massy Foundation, is continuing its push for literacy with the installation of the 27th and 28th ‘Little Libraries’ at Holy Innocents Primary School in St Thomas, and St Margaret’s Primary School in St John, last week.

Teaming up with the Ministry of Education Transformation, the Barbados Is Blooming initiative branched out to both schools as part of its mandate to improve literacy and ensure that students have greater access to books in safe, engaging and community-centred spaces.

Prince Godwill D Fomusoh, founder of PGDFF which is a registered nonprofit corporation in California, United States, in a message stated: “Allowing us to be a part of the children’s journey is an honour. With investment and help from our corporate partners, we can be champions of hope in their lives.”

In addition to books, reading tools and word games were also donated.

Through the Massy Foundation, over $325 000 has been donated to the Barbados Is Blooming programme, contributing to its goal of establishing 35 stations across the country before year-end.

At St Margaret’s Primary School, member of the advisory panel for the Massy Foundation Natalie McDowald said: “As the author Frederick Douglass once said, once you learn to read, you will be forever free. Reading opens doors to knowledge, builds confidence and creativity, and allows children to imagine futures beyond what they see today. It strengthens their ability to think critically, communicate effectively and engage fully with the world around them. In short, it equips them with the tools they need not just to succeed, but to thrive.” (JRN)
