Fire cadet programme marks 26 years with expanded intake

A record intake of young people has joined the fire cadet programme this summer, as the initiative marks 26 years by doubling  its capacity, expanding from 50 to 100 available places.

The milestone was celebrated during an opening ceremony at Parkinson Memorial School, attended by government and fire service dignitaries, instructors and families.

Addressing the audience under this year’s theme, Empowering Tomorrow’s Future Leaders, co-ordinator Rozel Davis emphasised that the programme goes far beyond basic emergency response. She explained that the core focus remains firmly on developing youth leadership by instilling discipline, teamwork and resilience.

The programme aims to build community responsibility through service, respect and pride, whilst enhancing fire safety training with structured, hands-on instruction, she said.

“This programme is more than just training,” Davis said during her welcoming speech. “It is an investment in the future of Barbados. Each cadet here today represents the strength, courage, and potential of our nation’s youth. By equipping them with knowledge, skills, and values, we are preparing them not only to respond to emergencies, but also to live with integrity in their schools, community, and their country.”

Davis extended her gratitude to both full-time and part-time instructors for sharing their expertise, and thanked parents for trusting the fire service with their children. Turning her attention to the new recruits, she urged them to embrace the opportunity with enthusiasm, noting that the lessons learned over the summer would serve them for a lifetime.

The event was also addressed by Minister of Home Affairs Gregory Nicholls, who officially declared the 2026 programme open. Nicholls praised the evolution of the scheme, noting that over more than two decades it has transformed from a mere summer activity into a highly respected institution.

Reflecting on the expansion to 100 cadet spaces, he noted that whilst it represents tremendous growth, there is still work to do to fill every single slot. He urged the public to contact the Barbados Fire Service to take advantage of the remaining opportunities.

Nicholls highlighted the critical role the programme plays at a time when societies worldwide are grappling with how to engage young people amidst rapid technological changes and increasing social pressures. He argued that youth are too often told what they cannot do, rather than what they can achieve.

“It is my hope that the programme will continue to offer a proper alternative for our youth,” Nicholls said. “It will transform passive interests into purposeful action. It will turn your curiosity into confidence, uncertainty into confidence, and useful energy into leadership. Most importantly, it will demonstrate that our young people are not the problems we solve, but the partners in building the future of our nation.”

The home affairs minister reminded the cadets that wearing the uniform brings a profound responsibility, representing honour, respect, commitment and a willingness to step forward when others step back. Over the coming weeks, the recruits will undergo rigorous training in fire safety, first aid, disaster preparedness, water safety, physical fitness and drill.

In a poignant moment, Nicholls paused to commend officers from the Barbados Fire Service who recently deployed on a rescue and recovery mission to Venezuela. He revealed that the Barbadian team performed extraordinarily well, receiving the highest commendations and medals from the Venezuelan government.

Nicholls expressed his hope to bring the young cadets to witness the officers’ return on Thursday to show them how Barbadian ingenuity can serve an international cause in times of crisis.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth development as a cornerstone of national resilience. He told the participants that true leadership is measured by character, humility, integrity and a willingness to serve.

“National resilience is not built only through infrastructure, equipment, or institutions. It is built through people,” Nicholls said. “When we invest in our youth, we invest in the resilience of our nation.”
