Two titles up for grabs at St George North Football Festival

New champions will be crowned when the St George North Grassroots Football Festival grand finale takes place at the Glebe Playing Field on Saturday.

The championship match and third-place playoff will headline the final day of action, while the event will also see the crowning of this year’s Go-Kart champion.

St George Youth Commissioner Keyún Walcott said the initiative, organised in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Youth Development Programme, represents more than just football.

“It represents our commitment to investing in young people while strengthening our communities and creating positive opportunities through sport,” he said. “We firmly believe that when our youth are given the opportunities and support, they develop not only as athletes but as disciplined and responsible citizens.”

He said over the past several weeks they have witnessed tremendous talent from every team that has participated, while the response from the community has been overwhelming and has shown how powerful sports can be in bringing people together.

The football final will see Young Boys opposing Ballerz FC, while in the third place playoff, Lions XL tackle Newbury Ballers, with the activities getting underway at noon. Eight teams took part in the competition.

We Gatherin’ Go Kart champion Rasheed Stoute is confident of retaining his title and sounded a warning to his opponents.

“I’m here to take home the crown and top prize. I never come to play, I always come to execute, but the hype has been building since last year.

The guys loved it and the numbers have also been growing among the karters.

“It’s a big thing, as big as Rally Barbados right now. People are coming from as far as St Lucy, St Philip and Christ Church, coming and saying we will be there,” he explained.

Member of Parliament for the area Toni Moore is encouraging Barbadians to participate in the event.

“I know everybody’s hyped with Crop Over and everything else, but we still have culture within the culture of Crop Over and that’s the sports and that’s the go-karting.

“Parents, you can bring your children, because we have the kids zone, so it is a day that everybody can come and be a part of it,” she stated.
