A towering figure in cricket and national life, Sir Garfield Sobers gave Barbados more than records — he gave a small island the confidence to measure itself against the world’s best, a Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) senior official has said.

Director of Marketing and Communications Steven Leslie said the late National Hero’s achievements continue to inspire Barbadians to pursue excellence in every field.
Speaking to Barbados TODAY at Kensington Oval, where one of the condolence books for Sir Garfield Sobers was available for members of the public to sign, Leslie reflected on the cricket legend’s extraordinary impact both on and off the field.
“Sir Garfield Sobers placed us on the global stage,” Leslie said, recalling the privilege of interacting with the cricket icon over the years.
He noted that world leaders and influential figures were drawn to Sobers’ presence because of his unparalleled accomplishments, adding that the Barbadian great helped shape the island’s identity through his sporting excellence.
“Where kings, where presidents, revelled in his presence,” Leslie said. “Sir Garfield Sobers was able, through those wonderful exploits on the cricket field, to provide Barbadians with an identity. An identity which meant that we can be excellent in what we do.”

Leslie said Sobers’ rise to become widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history carried special significance given the sport’s colonial roots.
“Remember, the history of cricket is that it was formed by the English. The English came, they colonised, and here it is… a Caribbean person, a Barbadian in Sir Garry Sobers, became the best all-rounder ever to have played the game,” he said. “I think that’s something that we as Caribbean people, and Barbadians in particular, can be truly proud of.”
Leslie also encouraged young cricketers and aspiring athletes to view Sobers’ life as proof that greatness is attainable through dedication to one’s craft.
“One of the beautiful things about Sir Garry’s legacy is that every individual can strive to reach the heights that he reached,” he said.
While acknowledging that few could hope to replicate Sobers’ extraordinary versatility as a batsman, bowler and fielder, Leslie said the cricket legend’s example extends far beyond statistics and trophies.
“Even though you may not have had the ability to bowl three different forms of left-arm bowling, bat so wonderfully well or be that close-to-the-wicket fielder, whatever your particular skill is, you can be the best in that particular area.” (SB)
