A State Service of Thanksgiving for the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers’ has prompted Bay Primary School to reflect on its historic link to the National Hero and the example his life continues to set for its pupils.
The cricket icon’s legacy lives on in classrooms as much as on cricket fields, said Bay Primary School principal Stacy Blunte, who described the National Hero’s journey from student to sporting icon as an inspiration to the school’s children to pursue excellence.
Blunte said Wednesday’s state funeral at Kensington Oval, which is to be held a day after what would have been Sir Garry’s 90th birthday, carried special meaning for the school.
Sir Garfield’s alma mater, the Bay Street Boys’ School, established in 1913, was relocated to its current Bayville location in 1958, making his connection to the school an enduring part of its history. The Bay Pasture, where he first mastered the game, is now the school’s playing field.
“Today is a particularly meaningful day for us as we reflect on the life and legacy of the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers and mark what would have been his 90th birthday,” Blunte said.
“It is a proud part of our heritage to know that one of Barbados’ greatest sons began his educational journey within this community.”
The school’s pride extended beyond Sobers’ unmatched cricketing accomplishments to the values he embodied throughout his life, she said.
“He was the greatest cricketer not that Barbados has ever seen, but that the entire world has ever seen. He was a gifted all-rounder whose brilliance with bat and ball established him among the greatest players this sport has ever produced. Not only with bat and ball, he was excellent out on the field.”
But Sobers’ greatest legacy was found not in records or statistics but in the character he displayed:
“His legacy goes way beyond statistics and records because it is found in the values he represented – discipline, humility and the commitment to giving his very best.”
Those principles, she said, closely mirror Bay Primary’s own motto, “I will use my Head, my Heart and my Hands to strive for excellence.”
“That word ‘excellence’ is grounded in our school’s motto, which states explicitly that we will use our heads, our hands and our hearts for excellence. That is what Sir Garfield Sobers did.”
Blunte said Sobers’ story serves as a reminder to students that success is not determined by one’s beginnings but by dedication and belief in one’s abilities.
“His story reminds us that greatness is not determined by where one begins, but by the passion, the discipline and the commitment that one brings to the journey.”
She expressed hope that the pupils will continue to see Sir Garry’s life as proof of what can be achieved through perseverance:
“As a young student with dreams, with talents and with potential, he went on to leave an indelible mark on the world. That is the message I am hoping our young people will carry with them.”
The school remains deeply honoured by its historic connection to the National Hero, she added.
“We are richer by his contribution and here at Bay Primary, we are especially proud of the connection we share with the son of this nation, whose name will be forever associated with greatness.”
