RF Prime women’s coach Kirk Corbin says his side must remain consistent despite securing a 2-0 victory over Technique in the Barbados Football Association’s Kotex Women’s League on Tuesday.
Goals either side of halftime from Kerisha Catlyn and Jamilah Neblett-Phillips secured the win at the Wildey Technical Centre, with Catlyn breaking the deadlock in the 44th minute before Neblett-Phillips doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half.
While pleased with the result, Corbin said matches between the two teams have traditionally been closely contested.
“If you go through the history of the results between ourselves and Technique, the results are very close. Most of the players are around the same age so physically, it is a stalemate.
“It’s just a matter of the mental state of the game and winning the key moments that separates the two teams, when we go head to head,” Corbin said.
The coach also praised both goalscorers, describing them as key members of the squad.
“Kerisha is what we would call one of the young veterans in the team, she’s in her early twenties and has been around the national team so we look to her to produce those moments obviously. She’s coming off an injury and now getting herself back into the full flow of things.
“Jamilah is a junior national player who is now going into 3rd form, and I think she now has about two goals for the season, so I believe that speaks volumes for what we’re doing at the academy.”
Reflecting on the season so far, Corbin said his preparations have been affected by injuries and the unavailability of players. He urged the team to be consistent and finish the season strongly.
“We have people who are coming off exams and graduations so hopefully we can capitalise on the vacation period. The key is to get everybody together, make sure people have recovered from the injuries and whatnot, and to have a strong second round,” he explained.
Corbin has welcomed the addition of the Prime Minister’s Cup for women, which will see its inaugural season kicking half in the last quarter of the year and boasting a 100 thousand dollar first prize.
He believes the additional playing opportunities and cash on offer, will be welcomed by female players across the island.
“Speaking to the women in local football, they’ve been saying that they don’t get to play enough, so now we have one tournament running right after the other, so we really don’t have any excuses about putting a product out there that would get people to come out and watch.
“For me, the important thing is to create a quality product. The first year of the Prime Minister’s Cup will give us an idea of what we would need to do going forward, so the key thing is to learn from it and see where we can go,” the coach explained.
Coach Corbin is adamant that women’s football needs to reach the stage where it is seen as a product in which the public would consistently invest its time and money.
League action continues at the BFA Technical Centre on Saturday as Whitehall oppose RF Prime, while Mavericks oppose Technique.
