Defending women’s champion Sheldene Waldrond says she is ready to defend her Barbados Road Tennis Open (BRTO) title when the island’s premier tournament serves off later this month.
The lucrative event offers a first prize of 20 000 dollars for the men’s and women’s champions and runs from August 15 to October 3.
“I started training again earlier this year, hopefully trying to regain my championship. I’ve been doing a lot of training, doing a lot of different stuff that changes the dynamics a bit,” Waldrond said.
Waldron, who defeated Rachel Smith in last year’s final, is pleased that organisers have opted to include an Under-18 competition this year.
“I always like to see it and I like to encourage the young ladies to play road tennis, so I always give them some confidence to help build them up,” Waldrond added.
According to BRTO Planning Committee Chairman Shawn Burke, the event, now in its fifth year, has become a symbol of excellence, opportunity and national pride.
“Five years ago, the BRTO was established with a clear vision to elevate our indigenous sport, provide greater opportunities for players and create a stage worthy of the exceptional talent that exists throughout Barbados.
“What began as an ambitious idea, has grown into Barbados’ premier road tennis tournament, a competition that showcases the very best players,” he explained.
According to Burke, the continued success of the tournament also demonstrates what can be achieved when vision is matched with commitment.
“So each year we challenge ourselves to raise the standard, not only for our players, but also for our supporters and partners who continue to believe in the future of this remarkable sport.
“Because our supporters are an essential part of the BRTO experience, we have expanded our fan engagement activities. Throughout the tournament, fans will have the opportunity to sign our commemorative display rackets, take photos, share them on social media, and compete for a special prize awarded to the post receiving the most likes. This fifth anniversary belongs not only to the players, but to every person who has supported this tournament over the past five years,” Burke concluded.
