Matthews in line for more ICC honours

Barbadian allrounder Hayley Matthews is on the shortlist for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Women’s Player-of-the-Month award for July.

The 28-year-old was the Player-of-the-Series on the recent tour of Ireland as she led West Indies to a comprehensive 3-0 triumph in the One-Day Internationals.

The West Indies captain took charge with both bat and ball in the three-match ODI series. She started with a bang, scoring a career-best 159 not out in the chase after taking three wickets for 52 at the Bready Cricket Ground. She followed up her outstanding performance with another century – 100 off 94 balls – which was the 12th of her career and the all-time record in West Indies history. She also had two more wickets in the second match.

Though restricted with the bat in the third match, she still made an impact by taking two wickets for 37 to help her side to a series clean sweep. These performances led her to No.2 on the ICC Women’s rankings for allrounders in ODIs. She continues to showcase her dominance as the best player in the world and is No.1 in the rankings for allrounders in T20 Internationals.

The other two contenders for the Player of the Month award are England captain Natt Sciver Brunt and Harshitha Samarawickrama, the Sri Lankan allrounder. (PS)
