Although she had close to $300 in her purse, a St Joseph woman stole $17 in food stuff from a Bridgetown supermarket earlier this month.
Jolene Eugene Graham, 61, of Coffee Gully, St Joseph, pleaded guilty to the offence when she appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Gayl Scott.
Sergeant Reginald Blackman explained that on August 14 Graham went into Jordans Supermarket located at Fairchild Street, The City, carrying a handbag and a shopping bag.
While she was there, Elvis Moore – the manager – was told by a guard that the woman was seen by a supervisor of the produce section, placing certain items inside the bag.
While Graham was leaving the store she was stopped by a security officer, who requested a search.
She consented and was taken to a private area of the supermarket. The stolen items, one package of mustard, two packages of Bajan mixed herbs and a package of baking powder were found along with other items for which Graham had paid.
The police were contacted and the woman taken to Central Police Station where investigations continued. It was discovered that Graham had $285 with her at the time, in a combination of United States and Barbados currency.
The first-time offender, who was represented by attorney-at-law Ensley Grainger, was reprimanded and discharged. She apologised to the court for her actions. (Sandra Downes)
