Three brothers have vowed to continue their six-year battle for accountability after their elderly mother was crushed to death by a ship-refuelling truck while disembarking a luxury Caribbean cruise in Barbados.
Janet Purkess, an 87-year-old British national, died on January 25, 2020, at the Bridgetown Port. She had just walked off the MV Saga Sapphire onto Break Water South Road when she was involved in a collision with a reversing 30-tonne crane truck.
Despite the tragedy occurring six years ago, the family’s fight for answers has only just reached a critical juncture following a United Kingdom coroner’s damning report back in June, and the dismissal of criminal charges in Barbados on a legal technicality. The family is now pursuing civil action, alleging a systemic cover-up by local authorities.
Purkess was a passenger on the MV Saga Sapphire, having saved for a £16 000 cruise which she had taken with friends.
