Competitive shooters Cliff Roett, Christopher Young and Gregory Wood led the Barbadian delegation with silver- and bronze-medal finishes at the 2026 Pan American Handgun Championship, held in Aruba from August 26 to 29.
The championship brought together 650 of the region’s leading sport shooters for a highly-competitive event, giving the Barbadians an opportunity to test their skills against competitors from around the world.
Team captain Young led the delegation, which also included regional director Kevin Grant, Antonio Waterman, Cliff Roett, Gregory Wood, Trevor Griffith, Adrian Marshall, Gerard Gill and Dwain Carter.
The team travelled to Aruba determined to represent Barbados with pride, deliver strong performances and gain valuable international competition experience. The athletes also sought to showcase the talent, dedication and sporting excellence that earned them a place in the 24-stage practical pistol competition.
Roett was the highest-placed Barbadian, finishing tenth overall in the optics division, which featured more than 100 competitors. He placed second among Caribbean competitors in his division.
Young finished 26th overall in the Open division and second in the Caribbean, while Grant placed 81st overall and 16th in the Caribbean.
The Production Optics team of Marshall, Waterman and Wood also competed for the divisional title. Wood finished 53rd in the division and third among Caribbean competitors. Marshall placed 65th in the division and seventh in the Caribbean, while Waterman finished 87th and 11th, respectively.
The team is now preparing for the Handgun Nationals, scheduled for November at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association. (SW/PR)
